References are an important part of the scholarship award process.
You need to provide contact details for an academic referee and a personal referee. We will contact your referees only if you are shortlisted for the scholarship award.
Please ensure you have permission from your referees to disclose their personal contact details.
Academic Reference
Please provide us with the contact details of a lecturer, tutor or academic who fulfils all the following criteria:
• This tutor/academic knows you well.
• This tutor/academic is prepared to give a statement about you.
UWL emails should follow the following format: Firstname.Lastname@uwl.ac.uk
Prospective students should list a teacher, tutor or academic from a previous institution they have attended. First year students can list a UWL tutor, or a tutor from a previous institution.
Personal Reference
A personal (character) reference can be provided by a business acquaintance, current or former line manager, coach, or a leader in your faith community.
A personal reference cannot be provided by family members such as parents, siblings, cousins, and other close relatives.
Please ensure your personal referee fulfils all the following criteria:
• This person knows you well.
• This person is not yourself or a member of your family.
• This person is not the same person who you have listed as an academic referee.
Please write a personal statement of 500 words, explaining why you think you should be awarded a scholarship or bursary.
Your Personal Statement must be written by you.
What should you write?
Your personal statement should be well structured and explain why you are a suitable candidate to receive a scholarship. It should present a picture of you as a person, a student, and a potential scholarship recipient. It is an opportunity to share your story.
Consider including:
• Why are you applying for a scholarship?
• What are your strongest traits that make you an ideal candidate for a scholarship?
• How have you performed in your previous/current studies?
• What are your major achievements, and why are you proud of them?
• What was the most challenging time in your life, and why? How did you overcome the challenges?
• What are your most important extracurricular or community activities? Why do you do these?
• What are your career aspirations and dreams for the future? What impact would the scholarship have on your education and your future?
