UWL hosts 10th Annual Law Dinner for the School of Law and Criminology

The 10th annual dinner for the School of Law and Criminology was held on Friday 17th November at the auspicious location of Lincoln’s Inn Old Hall in central London. Lincoln's Inn is one of the four Inns of Court. The Inns of Court have prepared students for centuries for Call to the Bar and with professional training to become barristers.

The evening was a great success with 90 guests in attendance from alumni, students, UWL staff past and present, the Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, honorary members and guests including two QC’s, a Judge and a BBC correspondent.

The highlight of the evening was a speech by Harry Potter…no not the Harry Potter of Hogwarts fame, but UWL alumnus (LLB, 1992), Defence Barrister, former BBC documentarian and author. Harry made the guests laugh out loud recounting his experience of being a defence barrister. Particularly amusing was his story of defending a client named Martin Luther King in one court while in the next court was a character named Ghandi. The court erupted into laughter (which he said was unheard of) when the tannoy called Martin Luther King and Harry Potter to court 2 and Ghandi to Court 1!

Congratulations to five students who were awarded bursaries and scholarships on the night.

• Michael Molyneux Bursary Prize for the best performing first year LLB student was awarded to Annetta Jackson.
• School of Law and Criminology Bursary Prize, which is awarded to the best performing second year LLB student awarded to Malwattage Peiris.
• Postgraduate Studies in Criminology and Criminal Justice Scholarship awarded to Karen Anthony.
• Piotr Mikiewicz Criminology scholarship awarded to Rachel Deacon.
• The Certificate of Recognition to an outstanding student for their continued hard work in Undergraduate studies and remarkable contribution in student engagement activities was presented to Kyla Burton.
