UWL hosts inaugural dinner for the School of Computing and Engineering

The School of Computing and Engineering (SCE) welcomed former students and industry partners to its first alumni dinner at the University of West London’s (UWL) award-winning Pillars Restaurant.

More than 70 professionals from the science, technology and engineering sectors enjoyed the inaugural event, which took place on 1 March. University Vice Chancellor, Professor Peter John, welcomed guests to the dinner, which was hosted by the Executive Head of the School, Professor Amir Alani.

Prof Alani delivered a presentation focusing upon the School’s achievements during the past three academic years, which has seen the publication of more than 160 research papers in academic journals in only two years, the enhancement of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects at UWL and outstanding scores for the School in the National Student Survey 2016 (NSS), including achieving 100 percent satisfaction in four courses – the top scores in the UK. Additionally, 70% of graduates found work within their chosen academic discipline and 97% found work within six months of graduation. Overall student satisfaction with the SCE was 96%. Guests also learned about a collaboration between the School and Hilton Worldwide, which investigated energy efficiency at the hotel group’s buildings and their resilience to extreme weather events.

Prof Alani said: ‘Our first alumni dinner was a great celebration of the achievements of our former students and the School; it was a very rich gathering with lots of people from professional bodies and from industry.'

‘Alumni are an integral part of our School’s community, so knowing that they’re doing well is very important and we can learn a lot from them. We were so lucky to have such a big attendance from every sector we approached.’

Guests had the opportunity to network with fellow professionals at the dinner, while live music was provided by London College of Music. SCE graduate Paul Hendrick – who is a member of UWL’s Alumni Board and also sits on the School’s Industry Consultative Committee for Computing – gave a vote of thanks to students from London Geller College of Hospitality and Tourism, who prepared and served a superb three course meal.

Alumnus Marcelo Lazaroni attended the dinner – having graduated in 2016 with BSc (Hons) Computer Science. He said: “I had a lovely time and was happy with the new connections I made in the IT management and construction management sectors. Meeting lecturers and classmates was so enjoyable and I’m looking forward to engaging more with the University by sharing practical lessons from the perspective of being a professional.”
